A new session of Parliament

On Wednesday 14 June I took the oath in preparation for the new session of Parliament.

Members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords are required to take an oath of allegiance to the Crown before they take their seats in Parliament after a general election. (Any MP or Member of the House of Lords who objects to swearing an oath can make a solemn affirmation instead.) This process is known as swearing in.

The oath says “I swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.”

Members are required to sign an undertaking to abide by the House of Lords Code of Conduct as part of the swearing-in procedure.
